Amazon Related Account Enforcement: 10 Fact Patterns From Our Case Files

By Kenneth G. Eade, founding attorney, AMZ Sellers Attorney® · Published October 3, 2026

Key takeaways
  • We reviewed 10 related-account matters covering 14 seller and author accounts, with notices dated August 27, 2023 to April 12, 2026: 5 on Seller Central and 5 on KDP.
  • The most common links were ordinary: a household sharing a laptop, Wi-Fi, a login, or an address (4 matters), and an agency or consultant that touched the account (3 matters).
  • Seller Central notices named the other account but never the signal. KDP notices named neither.
  • Our three reinstatements were all on Seller Central. Two were agency cases won with a legal-department letter, the agency contract, its termination, and proof of payment.
  • KDP related-account appeals were typically upheld within a day. They need a different strategy from the start.

"Related account" deactivations feel arbitrary because Amazon rarely explains them. Our files show they usually are not. In nearly every matter, the link traced back to a person or a piece of shared infrastructure the seller had not thought about. Here are the 10 fact patterns, what Amazon said, and what we did about them.

How We Built This Dataset

We reviewed every related-account file the firm opened between September 2023 and April 2026. That is 10 matters for 10 sellers and authors, covering 14 of their accounts. For each, we recorded the platform, the notice, the actual linking signal shown by the documents, the evidence submitted, and the outcome recorded in the file. A later dropshipping deactivation for one of the same sellers is discussed separately. All details are anonymized; third parties are not named.

The 10 Fact Patterns

# Platform What linked the accounts What Amazon's notice said What we submitted Outcome recorded in file
1 Seller Central, US An agency put its own corporate card on the seller's account and accessed it from the devices and networks it used for another seller Named the other seller's account; no signal Plans of action, escalation, follow-up, letter to Amazon's legal department, the agency contract and its termination, payment proof, sworn declaration Reinstated 56 days after the legal letter
2 Seller Central, US A setup agency used the same address, connection, or device across accounts Named the other account; no signal Three plans of action, two escalations, letter to Amazon's legal department, incorporation records, agency contract and termination, payment proof Reinstated roughly 31 to 38 days after the legal letter
3 Seller Central, US Cousins shared a storage and shipping address and an overseas virtual assistant; one account already had counterfeit claims "You have a separate account … which was enforced" Inventory appeal, plans of action, escalations, notarized affidavit, supplier invoices, card statements, shipping records Inventory released, then account reactivated with funds hold removed, 95 days after the notice
4 KDP Spouses shared a home and Wi-Fi; one account had been terminated for content guidelines "Related to an account that was terminated"; neither account nor signal named Plans of action, escalation, apostilled affidavit, rights-transfer contracts, separate banking, letter to Amazon's legal department Amazon's legal department upheld the termination on the first account; second account not recorded
5 Seller Central, US The seller used a partner's laptop and internet; one return address matched hers. Her account had been enforced over product-safety requests Named the other account and its creation date; no signal Three plans of action, two escalations, letter to Amazon's legal department, the partner's notarized declaration, the seller's affidavits Not recorded in file
6 Seller Central, US A spouse accessed both a family business account and the seller's account with one login from office and home; the family account's return address was the seller's home Named the other account; no signal The linked account was dissolved and appealed first; dissolution records, brand authorization, invoices, card statements Not recorded in file
7 KDP Two business partners held individual accounts and a joint partnership account Not recorded in file Engagement for two terminated accounts; co-author rights confirmation gathered Not recorded in file
8 KDP The author accidentally created a second account by signing in with buyer credentials; KDP closed it the same day "Related to a KDP account that we previously terminated"; nothing named Three plans of action, the support chat transcript, company records, bank statement Not recorded in file
9 KDP and ACX A publishing consultant's designer created the account and held the login; unauthorized copies of the author's book later appeared "Related to an account that we previously terminated"; nothing named; ACX followed with 10 days' notice Escalation with the consultant's records and timeline Not recorded in file
10 KDP Unknown; possible second-hand laptop or public Wi-Fi "Related to an account that was terminated due to violations of our Content Guidelines" Retained after the author's own four appeals and two emails to Amazon's CEO in seven days Not recorded in file

What the Patterns Have in Common

1. The link is usually a person, not a scheme

Seven of the 10 matters traced back to a spouse, partner, cousin, business partner, agency, or consultant. Shared devices, networks, logins, addresses, and payment cards were the mechanics. Amazon's systems treat those overlaps as common control until the seller proves otherwise.

2. Agencies are a recurring risk

Three matters involved an outside agency or consultant with access to the account. In one, the agency put its own corporate card on the seller's account. Both agency matters with a recorded outcome ended in reinstatement, because the seller could document an arm's-length contract, its termination, and payment.

3. Amazon tells you which account, not why

Every Seller Central notice in the files named the other account and none named the signal. Every KDP notice named neither. The appeal has to reconstruct the signal from the facts before it can disprove common control.

4. Amazon's own notice tells you what proof it accepts

Seller Central rejection notices in two matters asked for a "sales deed, purchase agreement, business transfer agreement, or contract termination." Amazon's Account Health team told one seller to remove the overlapping details and submit a signed affidavit. Our reinstated cases delivered exactly that kind of proof, backed by sworn statements from both sides of the link.

5. When the linked account is yours, fix that account first

In the cousin matter, the account was reactivated only after supplier invoices, card statements, and shipping records resolved the counterfeit claims on the linked account. Inventory came back on June 3, 2025, and the account and funds on June 8, 2025.

6. KDP is harder and faster

KDP related-account appeals were upheld within a day in three matters, and the only KDP outcome recorded in the files is a loss before Amazon's legal department. A KDP termination can also cost the author's ACX audiobook account, which in one matter received 10 days' notice three days after the KDP termination.

7. Self-appeals pile up before counsel arrives

One author sent four appeals and two emails to Amazon's CEO in seven days. One seller's case history showed 36 support cases. Another seller had filed about four appeals. Every one of those submissions becomes part of the record the next reviewer reads.

8. Reinstatement is not the end

One reinstated seller was deactivated again 77 days later for dropshipping, tied to activity from the same former agency. After reinstatement, remove every third-party credential, card, and device, and document that you did.

What to Do After a Related-Account Notice

  1. Write down every person and company who has touched your account: family, partners, staff, assistants, agencies, consultants, software tools.
  2. List every shared device, network, address, card, and login.
  3. Identify whether the linked account is yours, a household member's, or a stranger's. The strategy is different for each.
  4. Gather contracts, terminations, payment records, and sworn statements from both sides of the link.
  5. Remove the overlap and document the removal before you appeal.
  6. On KDP, plan for escalation from the start; a standard appeal is usually upheld within a day.

FAQ

Does Amazon tell you which account yours is related to?

On Seller Central, usually yes, but not why. In every Seller Central related-account notice in our files, Amazon named the other account but not the signal that linked them. On KDP, no: none of the KDP termination notices in our files named the related account or the signal.

How do I prove I don't own the related account?

Amazon's own rejection notices ask for a sales deed, purchase agreement, business transfer agreement, or contract termination. In our reinstated agency cases, the winning package was the agency contract, the termination of that contract, proof of payment, and a declaration under penalty of perjury explaining how the agency's card, devices, or network reached the seller's account.

How long does a related-account reinstatement take?

In our three reinstated Seller Central matters, reinstatement came 95 days after the deactivation notice in one case, 56 days after the legal letter in another, and roughly 31 to 38 days after the legal letter in the third. KDP related-account appeals were typically upheld within one day.
